What Happens During a Reiki Session

If you’ve ever been curious about Reiki, you may have wondered what actually happens during a session. The experience is often much simpler and more comforting than people expect. A Reiki session is not about diagnosing, fixing, or forcing change. It is about creating a safe and supportive space where your body and energy can relax and return to balance.
During a session, you typically lie down fully clothed on a massage table or sit comfortably in a chair. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body, following a series of positions that support the flow of energy. There is no pressure or manipulation. The touch is gentle, and you are always in control of your comfort.
Many people notice sensations such as warmth, tingling, or a subtle pulsing where the hands are placed. Others feel deeply relaxed, as if their nervous system is finally able to settle. Some people drift into a meditative state or even fall asleep. There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki. Your body receives exactly what it needs in that moment.
Emotionally, a session can feel like a release. You might notice thoughts slowing down, a sense of heaviness lifting, or an unexpected feeling of peace. This happens because Reiki supports the body’s natural ability to regulate itself. When the nervous system feels safe, healing responses can begin to unfold.
Reiki can also be offered at a distance. While this may sound unusual, many people experience the same sense of calm and support without being in the same physical space. Energy is not bound by location, and focused intention allows the practitioner to connect with your energy field wherever you are.
After a session, you may feel lighter, more grounded, or simply more present in your body. Some people notice gradual shifts over the following days, such as improved sleep, clearer thinking, or greater emotional balance. Reiki is not about instant transformation. It is about gently supporting your system so that change can happen in a way that feels safe and sustainable.

What would it feel like to give my body permission to rest and receive without needing to do anything at all?
