When Things Feel Off & You Don’t Know Why

Have you ever gone through a time when things just felt… off? Not terrible. Not dramatic. Just different. Heavier. Quieter. Less clear.
Maybe things that used to make you happy don’t hit the same way. Maybe you feel more tired, more emotional, or more unsure about what you want. Maybe you’ve started questioning things you never questioned before, like your job, your relationships, or even what you believe about yourself and the world.
If you’ve been in a season like this, you’re not strange, broken, or doing something wrong. Many people experience this at different points in life. In spiritual language, it’s sometimes called the “dark night of the soul,” but really it’s just a time when the old way of being no longer fits, and the new way hasn’t quite formed yet.
That middle space can feel uncomfortable.
It can feel lonely, confusing, or even a little scary. You might feel disconnected from things that used to give you meaning. You might feel like you’ve lost your motivation or your sense of direction. You might feel like you’re waiting for something, but you don’t know what. This doesn’t mean you’re going backward.
It usually means you’re changing.
When we grow, we often have to let go of old beliefs, habits, identities, or ways of living before we can fully step into new ones. And that in-between phase can feel empty before it feels clear. Think of it like cleaning out a closet. At some point, everything is on the floor, and it looks worse before it looks better. That’s this phase. It helps to be gentle with yourself here. This is not the time to push harder, force answers, or demand clarity from yourself. This is a time for rest, support, and honesty.
Talk to someone you trust. Spend time doing things that help you feel calm or grounded. Let yourself move a little slower than usual. You don’t need to fix yourself. You don’t need to figure everything out. You just need to stay present with yourself while things rearrange.
This season will pass. It always does. And when it does, you’ll likely find that you understand yourself a little better, care about different things than you used to, and feel more aligned with what truly matters to you.
Weekly reflection:
What feels uncertain or unclear for you right now, and how can you be a little kinder to yourself about it?
